MILFORD – Burleigh V. Shorey, 85, went to his Lord and Savior March 29, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Enfield, a son of William V. and Myrtle A. (Ewings) Shorey.
Burleigh was a veteran of World War II, having served as a submariner with the U.S. Navy. He was very proud of his service and was awarded the Presidential Citation for Bravery. He was a lifelong truck driver having worked for himself, family and commercially.
He was twice awarded the 1 Million Miles Safety Award by Coles Express. Burleigh was an active member of United Baptist Church, Old Town, where he established the local chapter of the Christian Service Brigade. He also served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Laura (Boober) Shorey of Milford; five children, Brenda Johnston and her husband, Steve, of Greenbush, Barbara Finch and her husband, Bob, of Old Town, Bill Shorey and his wife, Sandy, of Columbia, S.C., Burleigh Shorey and his wife, Kathy, of Winterport and Kevin Shorey and his wife, Andrea, of Ellsworth; nine grandchildren, Matt Finch, Sarah Finch, Justin Shorey, Joshua Shorey, Meagan Shorey, Kristin Barker, Isaac Shorey, Jeremiah Shorey and Caleb Shorey; three great-grandchildren with a fourth due in June, many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Glendon Shorey at age 3; three sisters, Barbara Shorey, Ona Jenkins and Helena Carpenter; and a brother, William “Skip” Shorey.
A funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday at United Baptist Church, Old Town, with the Rev. Bruce Stevens officiating, assisted by son, Bill Shorey.
