CAMDEN, Maine — Police are investigating an incident on Mount Megunticook in Camden Hills State Park in which two people, a man and a woman, were injured Thursday afternoon.
“We don’t know if there has been a crime at this point. Maine State Police will investigate and see if we can determine what happened,” Camden Police Chief Randy Gagne said at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
No names were being released.
He said the severely injured woman managed to make it down the mountain to Route 52 near the boat landing where she was spotted by a passer-by who called Camden police at about 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
An ambulance took her to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport, but Gagne believed she later was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to either Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor or Maine Medical Center in Portland.
A massive search ensued for the man, including numerous officers and volunteers on the ground and a Maine Warden Service plane. Gagne said at about 6 p.m. that the man had been found injured and was being taken down the mountain.
Rescue crews appeared to be making their own trail down a steep, rocky section of the mountain while carrying the man on a stretcher at about 6:30 p.m. They got him down to Route 52 about a quarter-mile from the boat landing. The man then was taken by ambulance to a nearby fire department parking lot so that he could be taken by LifeFlight to a hospital.
Gagne said no further information would be made available until Friday morning.
Among the agencies involved Thursday afternoon were Maine State Police, Camden Police and Fire Departments, Lincolnville Police and Fire Departments, Maine Warden Service and Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
