MILLINOCKET, BANGOR and LINCOLN – Shirley L. Warren died April 14, 2011, in her sleep, at Katahdin Health Care Nursing Home, Millinocket. She was born Shirley Sweet Leathers, Sept. 25, 1914, in Winn, daughter of Frank H. Leathers and Eva C. (Sweet) Leathers, the youngest of seven in a closely knit farm family.
Shirley was married to Lloyd A. Warren from Lincoln for 64 years, until his death in 1998. Together they bore two sons, David Warren, in 1939, and Wallace Warren, in 1945. Shirley was well known in the town of Lincoln for her Saturday night baked beans and coleslaw at the Snack Bar Restaurant on Route 2, just outside of town. Shirley and Lloyd ran the Snack Bar for a number of years before moving to Bangor in 1959, where they owned and operated a large rooming house for several more years. At the Snack Bar and the rooming house, Shirley exuded a warmth, gaiety and caring for others, which was a hallmark of her life. Deeply religious, Shirley and Lloyd were devoted to their churches: First Congregational Church, Lincoln, and later Hammond Street Congregational Church, Bangor. Theirs was a life rich with friends and fellowship, faith and compassion. From the Snack Bar in Lincoln to the rooming house on Broadway in Bangor, Shirley offered food and love to all.
Shirley is survived by one son, Wallace Warren of Ripley; and grandchildren, Clifford Warren of Bangor, Joshua Warren of Montville, Marc Warren of Newport, Jennifer and Adrienne Warren of Pittsfield, Mass., and Justin Warren of New Orleans.
Friends may call noon-2 p.m. Friday, April 22, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Mark Doty officiating. Interment will be at Lincoln Cemetery. Those who wish may sign an online register and leave written condolences at
