BAILEYVILLE – John Sheldon Howland, 68, passed away Monday, April 25, 2011, at his home. John was born Dec. 14, 1942, in Bangor.

After graduating from Vanceboro High School, John entered the U.S. Air Force serving in communications. In 1963 he returned home and worked in the woods until being hired by St. Croix Pulp & Paper, where John worked for more than 30 years. While employed with St. Croix Pulp & Paper, he initiated the Employee Assistance Program, which was eventually adopted by all of Georgia Pacific’s mills. John was a member of the Odd Fellows, Baileyville, serving as the district deputy, and also with the Encampment in McAdam, New Brunswick. He also was a proud member of St. Croix Lodge No. 46 AF & AM, Calais, Royal Arch Chapter, Hugh De Payne Commandery, Anah Temple Shrine and Schoodic Shrine Club, both in Bangor, and William T. Wren Post No. 23 American Legion, Baileyville. John enjoyed fishing, hunting, cribbage, darts and most importantly, spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Dorothy Kelley; a brother, Ronald Howland; and a sister, June Howland. Surviving are his loving wife of 45 years, Katrine (Sutherland) Howland; four children, May Lynn Milburn and her husband, Mike, of Calais, Jon Eales and his wife, Tina, of Calais, Kathy Eales of Baileyville and Shawn Howland and his wife, Lisa, of Baileyville; seven grandchildren, Missy Campbell and her husband, Bryan, of Baileyville, Michael Milburn and his wife, Aleisha, of Calais, Meaghan Eales of Connecticut, Andrew and Ian Howland of Baileyville and Falon and Dillon Eales of Calais; three great-grandchildren, Nathan Campbell, Mackenzie Campbell and Khloe Milburn; many nieces and nephews; and his feline companion, Miss Kitty.
