MOUNT DESERT – Mary Alice V. Fox, M.D., 87, died April 25, 2011, at Mount Desert Island Hospital after a brief, acute illness. She was born June 26, 1923, in Monroe, N.C., to John Colin MacRae Vann and Jane (Gulledge) Vann.
She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Women’s College of North Carolina, Greensboro, in 1944 and attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, before completing medical training at the University of Pennsylvania in 1948, where she met her future husband, Samuel M. Fox III. She interned at the Hospital of the Medical College of Virginia and completed a residency at the Philadelphia Children’s Hospital. After accompanying her husband to London and Cairo, she established a private practice in Bethesda, Md., and also served in the health department of Montgomery County, Maryland. She later was chief of Crippled Children’s Control for the state of Maryland until holding a similar position in Montgomery County. She retired in 1979. She accompanied her husband upon his retirement to Somesville, Mount Desert, in 1994. They moved to Birch Bay Village in 2009. Mary Alice was an active skier, golfer, canoeist and duplicate bridge player in Ellsworth and Brewer; she also enjoyed her two cats.
She is survived by her loving husband of almost 62 years, Sam; and by her children, Elizabeth Fox, Ph.D., of Cambridge, Mass., and her daughter, Edith Zimmerman, John of Virginia Beach, Va., and his wife, Maria, and their sons, John and Patrick, and daughter, Cecilia, Sam IV of Fairfield, Conn., and his wife, Andrea, and their daughters, Emma and Sarah, and Emily F. Conant, M.D., of Philadelphia, and her husband, Jonathan, and their daughters, Hannah and Alice, and son, Samuel. She is also survived by her brother, Alex; numerous nieces and nephews. Her children and husband were in attendance during her last days.
