ORRINGTON – Chief Warrant Officer 4 Robert M. Black, retired, 86, died peacefully April 22, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at his residence. He was born July 6, 1924, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, the son of Earl D. Black and Nettie (Ferson) Black.
Robert was a 30-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and was at the Battle of Midway Island, and in the South Pacific for 21/2 years. He later served in Korea and Vietnam. In 1946 he married Betty Farrington of Brewer. Robert was a member of the Pine Tree Chapter of the Retired Officers Association.
In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by his daughter, Tina Sandlin and husband, Louis, of Havelock, N.C.; son, Bruce and wife, Kathrine, of Bucksport; and daughter, Rebecca McKay and husband, Peter, of Spring Hill, Fla.; four beloved grandchildren, seven special great-grandchildren, several dear nieces and nephews, and many wonderful friends.
At his request, there will be no funeral. Services will be held at a later date. Those wishing to make contributions may do so to Bangor Humane Society; Ark Animal Shelter, Cherryfield; and St. Joseph Hospice, Bangor.
