ETNA – Douglas A. Woodard, 59, died Monday, April 18, 2011, at his home. Doug was born Feb. 3, 1952, in Bangor, the son of Malcolm and Georgie (Allum) Woodard.
He graduated from Hermon High School, Class of 1971, and married Polly Jo Davis Jan. 13, 1973. He was employed by the state of Maine Department of Transportation for 25 years, where he retired as maintenance supervisor in 1996. Doug was a devoted family man, friend and helpful neighbor. He was a compassionate and determined man, who was very driven, hard working and dedicated to maintaining the family farm. Doug was known for his sense of humor and helpful nature. He loved farming, carpentry, working with machinery and coin collecting. Always a student, he enjoyed learning through educational programs and studying astronomy with his telescope. He also loved nature and took pleasure in photographing fall and winter scenery. Mostly, he enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends and lending a helping hand whenever needed. He will be lovingly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Polly Jo Woodard of Etna; his daughter, Tyra Payne and her husband, Joe, of Hermon; his newborn grandson, Cayden; his mother, Georgie Woodard of Carmel; several brothers and sisters, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Malcolm Woodard; several brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, May 2, with the Rev. Glenn Nichols officiating. Interment will be afterward at Highland Cemetery, Route 2, Carmel. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in his memory to the charity of one’s choice.
