Brewer library now certified passport acceptance agency

BREWER, Maine – – The Brewer Public Library is now a certified U.S. passport acceptance agency, Donna Rasche Brewer Public Library director, announced.

The city clerk’s office had been handling passports, but a new federal rule that went into effect in May prohibits them from continuing the process because they already issue birth certificates, so Brewer City Council voted to train library staff to do the work.

The library will process applications from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and on Saturdays by appointment only.

Six people vie for posts in Orrington

ORRINGTON, Maine — Six people are running for two selectman seats and two school board seats that will be decided in June 6 local elections.

Incumbent Selectmen Patricia Gott and Howard Grover are running against newcomer Terrence Bladen for the two open selectman seats. Incumbent Glendon Rand II is running against Jennifer Long and Robert Phillips for two seats on the school board. School board member Kathy Lawrence decided not to run. Local elections are 7 a.m.-6:30 p.m. June 6, and the annual town meeting is 7:30 p.m., at Center Drive School.  

Five candidates announce for Holden council, SAD 63 openings

HOLDEN, Maine — Five residents have thrown their names in the ring to fill two Town Council and one SAD 63 board seat during June 14 local elections.

Incumbent Councilors Robert Harvey and Ralph McLeod are running against resident Kerry Zimmerman. Incumbent SAD 63 board member Donald Varnum is running against another incumbent, Karen Clark, who served on the school board for Eddington and had to resign her post when she moved to town.

Local elections are June 14, and a meet-the-candidate forum is scheduled for May 16 during the 6 p.m. Town Council meeting.

Funds raised by Relay For Life to help fight cancer

ORONO, Maine — The community will walk 18 hours in the battle against cancer when the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Penobscot gets under way at 6 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Morse Field at the University of Maine.

Microenterprise marketplace on May 7 at Bangor Mall

BANGOR, Maine — MaineStream Finance along with the Eastern Maine Incubator Without Walls Program will hold the annual Maine Marketplace from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Bangor Mall.

Many of the businesses at the Marketplace got their head start in business by participating in the Eastern Maine Incubator Without Walls program. Established in 1999, this program provides classroom training and networking opportunities for individuals who want to start or expand a microenterprise.

Airport Mall event to mark National Train Day

BANGOR, Maine — National Train Day to be celebrated from 10 a.m. 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7,  at Airport Mall on Union Street in Bangor.

This is the fourth annual National Train Day created by Amtrak, the national passenger railroad system It is recognized in dozens of cities across the U.S. The event is free and features a number of displays recognizing railroading in Maine.
