BANGOR – Malcolm “Mal” E. Jones, 81, passed away peacefully May 8, 2011, at Maine Veterans Home. He was born Aug. 23, 1929, in Athens, to Wallace E. and Clarice H. Jones.
Mal graduated from Somerset Academy, Athens, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from the University of Maine in 1952, followed by service in the U.S. Army in Korea. Upon his release from military service in 1954, he became employed by Bangor Savings Bank as a teller and messenger. Subsequently, he held numerous positions leading to election as executive vice president, a member of the board of trustee in 1971, and president and CEO in 1975. In 1995 he retired as president and trustee. He served the savings bank industry in many capacities, including chairman of Savings Bank Association of Maine and a member of the board of directors of the National Association of Mutual Savings Banks. He participated in various organizations, including past president of United Way; member of board of trustees of Eastern Maine Medical Center; board of directors of Eastern Maine Healthcare, president; University of Maine Foundation, president; Phillips-Strickland House, president; member of board of directors of Training and Development Corp.; Bangor Center Development Corp.; Bass Park Corp.; City of Bangor Civil Service Commission and Service Review boards; member of board of trustees of Katahdin Area Council of Boy Scouts; member of Bangor Rotary Club; and member of the Merchants’ Association. Mal was recognized for his contributions to banking and the community with many awards throughout the course of his long career and residence in Bangor.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara (Porter) Jones; two daughters, Pamela and Lisa, and their husbands, Glenn Correll and Gordon Simmons; grandchildren, Sabrina and Michael Correll, and Amber and Vaughn Simmons; a sister, Ellen Jones; one nephew and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, William Jones and Vaughn Jones.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, immediately after the service. Interment will be at Mount Rest Cemetery, Athens.
