BANGOR – Leona H. (Smart) Ryan, 89, died Thursday, May 12, 2011, at a Bangor hospital. She was born March 20, 1922, in Corinth, daughter of Elmer and Minette (Andrews) Smart.
Leona was educated in Corinth and Bangor school systems. She married John G. Ryan Sept. 9, 1942, and together they traveled as John was in the military and civil service. Leona enjoyed fresh flowers, shopping, big band music and ballroom dancing at Beech Grove Dance Hall. She loved being with her family and all her nieces and nephews.
Leona is survived by her sisters, Nathalie Stone and her husband, Donald, of Falmouth and Loraine Hill and her husband, Irvin, of Bangor; many nieces and nephews, including special niece and caregiver, Leanne Cox. In addition to her parents and husband, Leona was predeceased by her sister, Lenora Peters; and nephews, Archie Curry Jr. and Wray Hodges.
Friends are welcome to call 4-6 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held noon Monday, May 16. After the service Interment will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor.
