OLD TOWN – Leland H. Davis, 88, son of Anges Mayo Davis and Leland H. Davis of Old Town, went home to be with the Lord May 8, 2011.
Leland was a life resident of Old Town, where he enjoyed a variety of activities from fishing, hunting and golfing to throwing horseshoes. In 1991, he traveled to Biloxi, Miss., and earned the world title for throwing horseshoes. Leland served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945, when he received an honorable discharge. He continued to serve his community as a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Organization as a past commander. He also worked at both the local shoe factory and paper mill until his retirement in 1989. During his retirement, Leland enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and grandchildren.
Leland is survived by his wife of 58 years, Esther Davis of Old Town; five daughters, Cindy Davis of Delray Beach, Fla., Patricia Bradstreet of Old Town, Carol Shaw of Charleston, Diane Searles of Casco and Debbie Davis of France. He is also survived by three sisters, Ella Dorr of Venice, Fla., Lydia Drake of Tacoma, Wash., and Barbara McCloud of Sanford; 11 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many special nieces and nephews. Leland was predeceased by his parents; son, Michael; daughter, Joyce; and three sisters, Francis, Ethel and Thelma. He will be lovingly remembered by his family for his many stories and tales, especially by his favorite son-in-law, Michael; and granddaughter, “Kaluka.” On behalf of Leland, a heartfelt thank-you to all of the wonderful people at the veterans home who treated him with dignity and respect during his final weeks. We will be ever grateful to all of the friends and families we met during his final journey as he made his way home to be with the Lord.
A memorial service will be held at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, with burial afterward at Forest Hill Cemetery. A reception will be after the burial. The time and date of service and burial will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Leland’s name to Maine Veterans Home, Unit C, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401. “Grampy, may your new
journey be filled with much peace, just like the song you use to share with me when I was a little girl, ‘Red Sails in the Sunset.’ Until we all meet again on the sandy shores
beyond.” All my love, Kailee
