BANGOR and BUCKSPORT – Beulah E. “Boo” Gardiner Wood Burrows passed away May 16, 2011, at a local hospital after a brief illness. Boo was born Oct. 28, 1916, in Port Mouton, Nova Scotia, to Edward C. and Annie S. Wentzell Gardiner.

Boo married A. Orval Wood, June 2, 1936, and they resided in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, for the next 15 years. In 1951, the Wood family moved to Potsdam, N.Y., after which they moved to Bucksport in 1961. Boo remained in Bucksport after Orval passed away in 1965. Eventually, she returned to her native Nova Scotia in 1979, when she married Fred K. Burrows, who passed away in 1993. Boo returned to the United States in 2003 in order to be closer to her children. She was a resident of the Country Villa, Bangor, for the past four years. Boo was an avid bridge player and thoroughly enjoyed 50 years of Marathon Bridge. She loved card and word games, and did the daily crossword puzzle her entire adult life. A voracious reader, Boo was also a huge fan of the Boston sport teams, especially her Red Sox!

Beulah is survived by her three loving children, Susan E. Lance of Cerritos, Calif., Phyllis W. Gould of Canton, Ga., and William E. Wood of Bucksport; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Beulah was predeceased by her sisters, Mossie B. Hopkins, E. Gertrude Bradley and Helen R. Wentzell; and her brother, Rogers Gardiner. The family thanks Care and Comfort of Waterville, as well as the owners and staff of Country Villa Retirement Inn for all their loving care during the past four years.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 19, at Elm Street Congregational Church, Bucksport, with the Rev. Linda A. Smith officiating. A reception will be after the service in Brown Hall. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Orland, beside her first husband, Orval. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Beulah’s memory to Elm Street Congregational Church, P.O. Box 878, Bucksport, ME 04416 or National Glaucoma Research www.ahaf.org/glaucoma, or 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871.
