CORINNA – Manny Fernandes, 81, died May 25, 2011, at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born March 1, 1930, in New Bedford, Mass., and graduated from Campbell Junior College. He also attended the University of Maryland, Northeastern University and the University of Maine. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Manny retired as a financial analyst with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, retiring in March 1994. He was a former member of Brighton (Mass.) Evangelical Congregational Church where he served as youth leader, adult Bible study leader, and chair of the council on ministries and the administrative board. In May 1994, he married the former Olivia Reeves and together they moved to Olivia’s hometown of Corinna. He was an active member of Corinna United Methodist Church. After completing lay pastor training, he worked in area nursing homes and at Maine State Prison. He was a member of Tres Dias and will also be remembered as the director of Corinna’s first homecoming parade.
In addition to his wife of Corinna, he is survived by a brother, Alexis Fernandes of Seattle; a niece, Sonia Fernandes; nephew, Joseph Fernandes; two great-nephews, Joseph Anthony Fernandes II and Justin Fernandes; and his cat, Penelope. He will be fondly remembered by dear friends, the Rev. John Eller, Grace Pearl Griffin and Bernice Griffin. He was predeceased by his mother, Cedelia Fernandes; a sister, Connie; and a brother, Norbert Nunes.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at Corinna United Methodist Church, 16 Dexter Road, Corinna, with Pastor Angela Tarbox officiating.
