TREMONT – Sophronia D. Campbell, 78, died June 2, 2011, at Mount Desert Island Hospital. She was born Dec. 12, 1932, in Tremont, to Julian and Julia (Kelley) Harper.
Sophronia, known as “Fronie,” grew up in Seal Cove as one of the Harper girls. When she met Walter Campbell, in 1948, she met the love of her life; they enjoyed 56 years of marriage. Together they lovingly raised their only child, Marilyn. Fronie and Walter spent many days together enjoying picnics on the coast of Mount Desert Island and camping at Branch Lake and Hadleys Point campgrounds. They were also avid Boston Red Sox fans and Fronie rarely missed watching a game. Fronie, known to many as Gram, was happiest when her family was near. Spending time with family brought her the most joy. Fronie and her daughter, Marilyn, enjoyed shopping trips and spending quality time together. She faithfully followed her grandchildren’s school and sporting events and loved being part of their lives. Gram especially enjoyed her three great-grandchildren. They filled her life with love, laughter and happiness. Fronie faced many health challenges, one being ALS. She accepted this diagnosis with grace and dignity, and amazed everyone with her positive attitude. Fronie spent the last seven years living with and being cared for by her daughter and son-in-law. She was determined to make the best of everything and adapted to her progressive physical limitations without ever complaining. She will be missed by so many people that were blessed to share in the love that she had.
Sophronia is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Craig McIntire of Seal Cove; two grandchildren, Jeffrey and wife, Kristin McIntire, of Ellsworth, and Amy and husband, Troy Mitchell, of Seal Cove; three great-grandchildren, Eliana and Nolan McIntire, and Chloe Mitchell; and sisters, Eva Goodwin of West Tremont and Katherine Curran of Bar Harbor. The family thanks Dr. Gilmore and the staff at Mount Desert Island Hospital for the excellent, compassionate care they provided to Sophronia. The family also thanks the staff at Sonogee Rehabilitation and Living Center for the kindness and care they showed Fronie during the last two months.
Friends are invited to call 4-6 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, June 6, with the Rev. Will Cass officiating.
