BANGOR – Mary (Whittier) Freeman, 81, died on her birthday, June 6, 2011, surrounded by her loving family at a local hospital.

Mary enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, traveling and playing bingo.

Surviving are her six children, Bonnie Kennie of Long Beach, Miss., Sally Spencer and her husband, Richard, of Bucksport, Stephen Freeman of Glenburn, Linda White and her husband, Kirk, of Hampden, Diane Freeman of Dedham, Peter Freeman and Rose Thurston of Newport; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom referred to her as “Nana Banana”; one brother, Robert J. Whittier Sr. of Dover-Foxcroft; nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her two best friends, Mary Jane Grady and Rebecca Elkins. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers and four sisters.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to meet 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the superintendent’s lodge, State Street entrance. Those who wish to remember Mary in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Maine Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330. A service of Brookings-Smith, Bangor.
