NORTH HAVEN, Maine — U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree and hedge fund manager Donald Sussman were married Saturday in a small ceremony.
Pingree and Sussman were married in a morning ceremony at the couple’s home on North Haven, an island off the coast of Maine, according to a press release issued by her office.
It is the second marriage for both the 56-year-old Pingree and the 65-year-old Sussman. Pingree’s three children and Sussman’s two children were among those who attended the ceremony.
The couple announced the marriage Saturday night to friends who gathered at a barn party on North Haven to celebrate Sussman’s birthday.
Pingree and Sussman met in 2007 and were engaged in 2008.
Their relationship came under scrutiny during last year’s congressional campaign when it was revealed she was traveling between Washington and Maine aboard Sussman’s private jet. Sussman is the founder of the Paloma Partners hedge fund, an investment firm in Greenwich, Conn., that manages more than $1.7 billion in funds.
Critics said Pingree, a Democrat, was living the high life while portraying herself as a small-business owner with Main Street values. But Pingree deflected the criticism and won the election with 55 percent of the vote.
