SORRENTO – Frank Hiram Preble, 88, died June 24, 2011, at Togus Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Augusta. He was born Dec. 17, 1922, in Sullivan, son of John W. and Helen (Eaton) Preble.
Frank was in the U.S. Marines during World War II and served in the South Pacific. He also served in the Marine Corps Reserve during the Korean War. He loved watching movies, his favorites being John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. He also enjoyed playing pool and cribbage, and telling stories of his youth. He was a member of American Legion, Franklin Veterans Club and St. Joseph Church.
Frank is survived by son, Stephen A. Preble of Holden; two daughters, Sharon A. Monahan and husband, Andy, of Sorrento, and Susan A. Heanssler and husband, Scott, of Deer Isle; grandchildren, Tyler, Zachary and Caleb Heanssler, whom Frank was very proud of; brother, Norman Preble of Dade City, Fla.; sisters, Margaret Tardy and husband, Stephen, of Winter Harbor, and Dorothy Bennett of Lamoine; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Frank is also survived by several friends, who brightened the last years of his life, Donald Wentworth of Franklin, Madeline and Samantha Bierman of Sorrento, and Sheila Batson of Ellsworth. Greg and the rest of the staff at Eastern Maine Dialysis, Ellsworth, were especially caring towards Frank, as well as his personal physician, O. Lee Haynes, who looked after Dad for 35 years in an exceptional manner. Frank also appreciated the friendship of his fellow patients at Eastern Maine Medical Center Dialysis Center. He will be sadly missed by his constant canine companions, Kira and Tucker, whom he doted on. He was predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Irene A. Preble; several brothers and sisters.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, June 30, at Mount Calvary Cemetery with Father Scott Mower, celebrant.
