BANGOR and BREWER – Frederick H. Martin, 73, died July 1, 2011, surrounded by family, after a brief illness at home. He was born in Caribou, the son of Frederick J. and Ethel H. Martin.

Fred graduated from Caribou High School, class of 1954. Fred started his career in insurance, achieving national recognition and active civic involvement. He was owner/ builder of Ponderosa Steakhouse restaurant, and publisher of numerous newspapers and statewide Golf magazine.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Nathan; and nephew, David Martin. Surviving in addition to his wife, Beth (Ballard) Martin, are his daughters, Connie Potvin and husband, Paul, of Hampden, Lynda Rohman and husband, John, of Bangor, Michelle McLellan and husband, Jim, of Bradenton, Fla., Rebecca Martin of Bangor and Nicole Caruso and husband, Warren, of Bangor. He is also survived by brother, Douglas Martin and wife, Gloria, of Old Town. He was known as Grumpy to his six grandchildren, Amelia and Eliot Potvin, Betsy and Molly McLellan and Nathan and Luke Caruso. He is also survived by nephews, Nathan and Kevin Martin. The family extends a very special thanks to his caregivers at Lafayette Cancer Care and Hospice of St. Joseph.

Relatives and friends are welcome to attend a memorial Mass 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, 425 South Main St., Brewer. The family welcomes friends to join them for conversation and refreshments at St. Teresa’s church hall after the memorial Mass. Interment will be held 1 p.m. Friday, July 8, at New Sweden Cemetery, New Sweden, with a reception immediately after.
