READFIELD – Hildegard E. Gramlich, 87, died peacefully Friday, July 1, 2011, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, after a short illness. She was born Jan. 25, 1924, in Germany, daughter of Ferdinand and Ida (Kohler) Rogenmoser.

She grew up in the town of Ebelsbach, Germany, and met her husband, Francis Gramlich, while he was in Germany as part of the Army of Occupation after World War II. They were married in 1945 and came to the U.S. in 1947. She and Francis lived in several places around the U.S. where his military career took them. They finally settled in Readfield in 1966 and raised their family there. Mrs. Gramlich was known for her wonderful gardens and her delicious cooking. She was also very talented as a seamstress, knitter, painter and crocheter. Her greatest talent was in raising her children and grandchildren.

Hildegard was predeceased by her husband, Francis, in 2006. She is survived by her children, Theodore F. Gramlich and his wife, Janine, of Cutler, Robert Gramlich and his wife, Linda, of Chesterville, Mike J. Gramlich and his wife, Susan, of East Holden, Francis J. Gramlich Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Wade, Dorothy L. McDonald and her husband, George, of Winthrop and Elisabeth Isbister and her husband, David, of Albion; grandchildren, Seth, Tabbitha and Benjamin Gramlich, Eric and Jessica Gramlich, Keith and Mark McDonald, Diana Davis, William, Stewart and Nicholas Gramlich, Manuel Ortega and Carla Turner; and his great-grandchildren, Destiny Faith Gramlich, Eden and Thomas Turner, Jacob Davis and Owen McDonald.

Relatives and friends may visit noon until the time of service 1 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta. Condolences may be sent to the family through
