SWANS ISLAND – Leila Floris White, 96, died July 4, 2011, on Swans Island. She was born Aug. 22, 1914, Swans Island, the daughter of Arthur N. and Mary L. Torrey.
Leila was a loving, caring, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She held her first job at age 11 as school janitor and she also played the banjo in her brother’s band. Leila was the organist for Swans Island Methodist Church for 20 years and the superintendent of the Sunday school. She was a mem-ber of the Rebecca’s Lodge.
She is survived by her son, Randal A. White of Swans Island; two daughters, Catherine M. Cosenze of Milford and Mari-lyn E. Cornish and her husband, Carl, of St. Cloud, Fla.; five grandchildren, Catherine M. Shorten, David A. and A. Steven Cosenze, Michelle Cornish and Sandra Muse; 10 great-grandchildren, Charles Shorten IV, twins, Eric and Jon Shorten, Andrew, Zachery, Joshua and Jacob Muse, Daniel and Cassandra Wiley and Christopher Cosenze; one great-great-grand-daughter, Hailey Hutchinson.
Friends are invited to call 10 a.m. until the time of service Friday, July 8, at Atlantic Baptist Church, Swans Island, where funeral services will be held noon with the Rev. Kenneth Dutille Jr. officiating. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. Contributions in Leila’s memory may be made to a church of your choice on Swans Island.
