BANGOR – Sgt. 1st Class, E7, Lawrence “Larry” H. Stover, 83, died Mon-day, July 4, 2011. He was born Nov. 15, 1927, in Portland, the oldest son of Lawrence T. and Elsie M. (Stacey) Stover.

Larry enlisted in the U.S. Army, Nov. 9, 1945, after serving two years in the Maine State Guard. Larry’s Army ser-vice included assignment in Le Havre, France; Cherevie, Belgium; Bremerhaven, Germany; and an assignment with the 2nd Armored Division “Hell on Wheels” in Gousenheim, Germany, where he met and married his wife, Kay, in 1957. They returned to the U.S. in 1958. Larry was assigned as the Army career counselor for the northern half of Maine for many years and retired after 23

years of active duty, Aug. 31, 1968. Larry also served two tours of duty in Korea, having been assigned to Imchon as Port Postal NCO and to Taegu assigned to HG 7th Lestichl Command. Upon returning from Germany in 1949, Larry was assigned as drum major of the Drum and Bugle Corps of the 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Wash. Larry was a member American Legion Post No. 84 Orono; Bangor Veterans of Foreign Wars Normand N. Dow Post No. 1761; Bangor Elks Lodge No. 244; and Old Town Elks Lodge No. 1287. Larry was a well-known member of the bingo communities of these organizations.

Larry is survived by his cousins, Donald and Ruth Stover of New Port Richey, Fla., and Janet and David Stover of Windham; and dear friend and caregiver, Janet M. Lewey of Bangor. In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased by his wife, Kay, Jan. 28, 2008; and his brother, Kenneth W. Stover.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, July 7, at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
