BANGOR – Betty Jean Small, 80, passed away July 10, 2011, after a long battle with a debilitating disease. She was born June 11, 1931, in North Tonawanda, N.Y., the daughter of Francis and Gertrude (Littlefield) Millett.
Betty earned a nursing degree at the University of Maine, Orono, and worked for several years as a registered nurse. After taking time off to focus on child rearing her brood of five, she retrained as a teacher and worked more than 20 years at Easton Elementary School in Northern Maine. During her teaching days she was active in Maine Teachers Association. She was an early adopter of computers in the classroom, using her personal computer. After her retirement she and Stanley split their time between Maine and Florida. Betty loved to travel, visiting every state except Hawaii and all parts of Canada, except for the Northwest Territory. Betty loved to swim and fish, swim and paddle, swim and read, and swim and play cribbage at the family camp. She enjoyed many crafts, especially knitting and quilting. In addition to bridge and cribbage, she enjoyed an occasional trip to the casinos.
She is survived by her handsome husband, Stanley Small of Bangor; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Jerry Reed of Apopka, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Bob MacGregor of Belfast; daughter, Susan Small of Litchfield; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Beth Small of Chester; daughter-in-law, Terry Moulton of Lincolnville; four grandchildren, Ben Reed, Jeff Reed, Karin Reed and Anna MacGregor; sister, June Fiske of Old Town; and brother, Sewell Millett in Fredericton, New Brunswick. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son, James Small.
