EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. – May (Weed) Newbert, 93, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2011, at Redstone Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She was born May 28, 1918, in Millinocket, daughter of the late Arthur G. and Annie (Turmenne) Weed.
She was a longtime resident of Thomaston, before moving to East Longmeadow, Mass. May graduated from Sterns High School in 1936 and attended Knox County General Hospital School of Nursing until 1939. In 1940 she trained at Central Maine General Hospital, Lewiston. From 1960 to 1961, she worked as a nurse at Camden Community Hospital and then from 1970 to 1971 at Fieldcrest Nursing Home, Waldoboro. For many years she worked at Lucette Rest Home, Thomaston, before retiring. May was a member of Thomaston Assembly of God Church for more than 30 years. While at the church, she was a very active member teaching Sunday school.
She was the beloved wife of 50 years to George T. Newbert Sr., who passed away in 1991. She was also predeceased by her son, George T. Newbert Jr.; and her daughter-in-law, Joan (Chadwick) Newbert, both in 1967. May is survived by her son, Wesley Newbert and his wife, Christine, of East Longmeadow, Mass.; her two granddaughters, Rochelle Newbert of Springfield, Mass., and Lindsay Grim and her husband, Jeremy, of Rhode Island; and two great-granddaughters, Alida and Daphne Grim.
A graveside ceremony for May will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at Village Cemetery, Thomaston. There are no calling hours. Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, East Longmeadow, Mass., has been entrusted with the arrangements.
