SANGERVILLE – Margaret Edgerly Poulin died July 11, 2011, at Mayo Regional Hospital. She was born July 27, 1920, at the family farm in Sangerville, daughter of the late Harold C. Edgerly and Octavia (McPhetres) Edgerly.
She was the wife of the late Mathias “Mac” “Matt” J. Poulin. She went to school at the one-room schoolhouse in Brockway’s Mills and graduated from Sangerville High School in 1937. Margaret was a 70-year member of South Sangerville Grange. She was a graduate of East St. Louis Academy of Beauty Culture and was licensed as a beauty culturist in the state of Illinois. During World War II Mac volunteered as a paratrooper and was in combat in France and Germany. Margaret and their 9-month-old son, Ty, went home to her parents on the family farm to stay for the duration. After the war was over, Margaret, along with her mother-in-law, Alphonsive Poulin, went by train to New York City to be there for Mac’s return and march down Fifth Avenue with the 101st Airborne. After Mac’s discharge he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a career serviceman. They lived in several states, including three years in Newfoundland. Margaret worked civil service as a clerk/stenographer for the Air Force. She received several yearly-sustained superior performance awards. About two years before Mac’s retirement, their daughter, Jeannie, was born in San Antonio. After retirement they returned to Sangerville to the Adra Richards homestead, which Mac proceeded to remodel while working at Piscataquis Sheriff’s Department. Margaret worked one year as a bookkeeper for the Dexter Shoe Co. office, Dexter. Then she was sworn in as clerk of Maine District Court, where she worked for 22 years until retirement. She enjoyed cake decorating, tole and canvas painting, leather craft, basketry and gardening.
She is survived by one son, Mathias “Ty” C. Poulin and his wife, Candron “Candy,” of Hermon; one daughter, Margaret “Jeannie” Curtis and her husband, Michael, of Sangerville; one grandson, Lukas Schneider of Sangerville; two granddaughters, Mariah Schneider of Sangerville and Emily Rose and her husband, Benjamin, of Pennsylvania; two great-granddaughters, Cassandra and Morgan Rose of Pennsylvania; a special niece and her husband, Shirley and Harry Drew of Guilford; a special nephew and his wife, Marvin and Donna Edgerly of Sangerville; a sister, June Mitchell of Guilford; and a brother, Keith Edgerly of Rimrock, Ariz. She was predeceased by her husband, Mathias Poulin; a brother, Arthur Edgerly; and a sister, Helen Bilbo.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Aug. 11 in the family lot at Townhouse Cemetery, Sangerville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
