SEARSPORT – Roberta E. Dakin, 93, died Monday, July 18, 2011, at Harbor Hill Center with her loving family by her side. She was born March 23, 1918, in Belfast, daughter of Edwin F. and Hazel M. (Greenlaw) Flanders.
She graduated from Crosby High School in 1935 and Waldo County General Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. On Dec. 28, 1940, she married the love of her life, Emery A. Dakin, and together they raised their family. Roberta also worked as a registered nurse doing private nursing care, school nursing care and also worked for Castine Hospital. She was a member of United Methodist Church of Searsport for more than 50 years. For 36 years she served as the chairwoman of ZA Circle, a women’s group of United Methodist Church of Searsport, and meetings of the group have been held at her home for the last 33 years.
She was a past member of the Rebekah’s.
She is survived by her children, Linda Johnson and husband, John, of Colorado, Howard Dakin and wife, Brenda, of Belfast, William Dakin and wife, Denise, of Stockton Springs, and Floyd Dakin of Winterport; grandchildren, Angelika “Angie” McAbee and husband, Kenneth, Veronika “Ronnie” Wilcox and husband, Jerry, all of Virginia, Annabell “Bobbie” Jacox and Scotty Loper, Katharina “Kathy” Monski, Richard Dakin and wife, Jennifer, Natascha “Taschi” Lightfoot and husband, Rodney, and Christina “Tina” Garcia, all of Colorado, Lisa Sweet and husband, Steven, of Windham, Michael Napoleone and wife, Lisa, of Saco, John Johnson and wife, Annette, of Colorado, Christopher Dakin and wife, Cheri, of Searsport, Stephanie Cartier and husband, Robert, of Waldo, Clinton Dakin, George Dakin and Chelsea Herrick, all of Stockton Springs, Shawn Dakin and wife, Debbie, of Searsport, and Stepheny Merando and husband, Matthew, of Belfast; 31 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Geraldine Molis of Massachusetts; two brothers-in-law, Lawrence “Bev” Dakin and wife, Donna, of Searsport, and Earl Deane of Camden; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Roberta was predeceased by her husband in 1994; one son, Emery E. Dakin; one daughter, Elaine M. Napoleone; and one sister, Helen Brock.
Family and friends will gather for visitation 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 22, at Young Funeral Home, 31 West Main St., Searsport. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, July 23, at United Methodist Church of Searsport, 42 East Main St., Searsport.
