SQUA PAN LAKE – Dwight G. Burtt, 71, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, July 19, 2011, at his home. He was born Aug. 22, 1939, in Presque Isle, the son of George and Mona (Staples) Burtt.
Dwight was the oldest of six children and attended Presque Isle schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1957 and served until 1961. He and his wife Ida were married in 1962 and moved to Virginia where he worked for VEPCO until 1970. He and his family returned to Aroostook County where he was employed by New England Telephone Co. until his retirement in 1996. From 1997 to 2001 Dwight and Ida traveled in Arizona and California where he also contracted telephone work. When they returned to Maine, they lived at their dream home at Squa Pan Lake. He worked part time for Site-Teck for several summers driving “his” dump truck. He also had a winter job as winter road commissioner for Squa Pan Outing Club. Dwight enjoyed hunting, fishing and canoeing. On his last day of life, he was up at daybreak and went fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Ida (Grant) Burtt of Squa Pan Lake; three sons, William Burtt and his wife, Jeanne, of Lisbon Falls, Matthew “Steve” Burtt and his companion, Lori Burtt, of Presque Isle and David Burtt of Presque Isle; two brothers, Charles “Alan” Burtt of Broad Run, Va., and John Burtt of Choctaw, Okla.; two sisters, Linda Southwell of Odenton, Md., and Nancy Dunlop of Falls Church, Va.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Roger Burtt.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. A private celebration of life will be held Saturday at the funeral home.
