BREWER – Joseph D. Cote, 93, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at his home. He was born Nov. 13, 1917, in Sheridan, son of Thomas P. and Hazel (Tardy) Cote.

He grew up mostly in Caribou, but had a special remembrance for Jackman where his family lived for a few years. After graduating from Caribou High School, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and later joined the U.S. Army where he was a veteran serving for three years in Africa, Italy and Germany during World War II. He later joined the U.S. Army Reserves and retired as a chief warrant officer three. Upon returning home he married Marcella F. Garity, his wife of 64 years, and moved to Brewer where he worked for Sears Roebuck and Co. for more than 30 years. His favorite hobbies were gardening, especially flower gardening, woodworking, using his computer and watching the Red Sox. Joseph was also a longtime communicant of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Brewer, and was a member of Knights of Columbus and 4th Degree Assembly.

In addition to his wife, Marcella of Brewer, he is survived by three children, Kathleen Joan (Cote) Hughes and her husband, Paul, of Cornville, Paul Francis Cote and his wife, Susan (Haskell) Cote, of Waterville and Ann Margaret Cote Wright and her husband, Rickey, of South Portland; five grandchildren, Joanna Lee Hughes Berube and her husband, John, of Billerica, Mass., Peter Joseph Hughes and his wife, Kristin, of Garner, N.C., Patrick Stephen Cote and his wife, Tracey, of Oakland, Elizabeth Anjoli Ouellette and her husband, Michael, of Benton and Paul Joseph Cote of Lisbon; four great-grandchildren, Lucas Peter Berube of Billerica, Mass., Caden, Beckett and Lexington Walter Cote, all of Oakland; two sisters, Lena Bouchard of Presque Isle and Evelyn Bouchard of Millinocket; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; one sister, Winnie Grass; and three brothers, Lawrence, Raymond and Robert Cote.

Family and friends may visit 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 21, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 22, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 531 North Main St., Brewer.
