OLD TOWN and STILLWATER – John E. MacKenzie Sr., 77, died July 28, 2011, at Maine Veterans Home, Bangor. He was born March 21, 1934, in Old Town, the son of Virgil and Gertrude (Brown) MacKenzie.
John was a graduate of Old Town High School, class of 1952, and Higgins Classical Institute in 1953. He served with the U.S. Army and then attended the University of Maine, Orono, from 1956 to 1958. John was an avid hunter and fisherman and a lifetime member of Star of the East Lodge, No. 60, AF & AM, Old Town.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Nancy (Knapp) Mackenzie of Stillwater; two sons, John of Kansas and James of Greenbush; three daughters, Patricia of Bangor, Terry of Durham and Sarah of Missouri; six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Virgil.
A service of remembrance will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, at Brookings-Smith, Orono Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono, with Pastor Steven Smith, of United Methodist Church of Orono, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the funeral home immediately after the service. Private interment will be at Lawndale Cemetery, Old remember John in a special way Town.
