SWANS ISLAND – Elizabeth “Betty” J. Carlson, 82, died July 29, 2011, at a local health care facility. She was born Nov. 21, 1928, in Montcoal, W.Va., the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Stanley) Heming.
Betty was a loyal Red Sox fan and an avid knitter. She was the postmaster of Minturn Post Office for 20 years, a member of Hockamock Players, chairman of Swans Island Educational Society board of trustees and a member of Advent Christian Church, Swans Island, where she was the organist for 60 years.
Betty is survived by her son, Donald Carlson of Swans Island; a daughter, Anna Carr and husband, Dennis, of Northeast Harbor; five grandchildren, Thomas and Jonathan Carr, Hilary Lisee, Scott and Christopher Carlson; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Sheldon; and a son, David.
Friends may call 10 a.m.-noon Friday, Aug. 5, at Swans Island Elementary School, Swans Island, where a funeral service will be held noon with the Rev. Kenneth Dutille and the Rev. Benjamin Redman officiating. Interment will be afterward at Rose Hill Cemetery, Swans Island.
