BRUNSWICK, Maine — A local man convicted in March of aggravated assault, aggravated criminal trespass and criminal threatening in connection with a September 2010 incident on Stanwood Street was sentenced Wednesday to serve seven years in prison for those crimes.

Manesseh Massaline, 41, initially was charged by Brunswick police with attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon after a Sept. 18, 2010, incident at a Stanwood Street apartment.

Officers responded that morning to find that a 26-year-old man reportedly had been stabbed and smacked in the head with a chair, police said at the time. The victim was treated and then released from Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Brunswick police arrested Massaline and Paul McClain, 42, of Bath later that week.

In March 2011, a Cumberland County grand jury found Massaline not guilty of attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. However, the jury convicted Massaline of aggravated assault, aggravated criminal trespass and criminal threatening.

On Wednesday, Justice Nancy Mills sentenced Massaline to 10 years in prison, with all but seven years suspended, and three years of probation for the aggravated assault conviction, Brunswick police Capt. Mark Waltz said.

Massaline was sentenced to three years — to be served concurrently — for the charge of aggravated criminal trespass, and 10 months, concurrent for the charge of aggravated criminal mischief, according to Waltz.

Assistant District Attorney Michael Madigan of the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office, who prosecuted the case, said Wednesday that the DA’s office is pleased with the sentence, which he called, “absolutely appropriate for the conduct that was alleged.”

Charges levied by Brunswick police against McClain initially included attempted murder, burglary and elevated aggravated assault, but subsequently were reduced to hindering apprehension and eventually dismissed because of a lack of evidence, Madigan said.

Massaline and McClain also await trial later this month in Sagadahoc County Superior Court on charges of felony kidnapping, elevated aggravated assault and robbery after Topsham police arrested them last fall in connection with an incident in that town.

In September 2010, Topsham police charged the duo with allegedly holding a 33-year-old Brunswick man against his will in Topsham, assaulting him and robbing him of prescription medications. The victim suffered “cutting injuries and swelling about the face” during the Sept. 18 incident, Topsham Police Chief Timothy Young said at the time. The man was treated and released from Parkview Adventist Medical Center.

Massaline and McClain are both scheduled for trial on those charges in Sagadahoc County Superior Court at 9 a.m. on Aug. 24.
