Musical duo

BANGOR — Kit Soden will perform with violinist Aliza Thibodeau 3-4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, in the Story Room at Bangor Public Library.

Thibodeau, a native of Bangor, has traveled throughout Europe with her partner, Kit Soden, as they performed songs from Soden’s CD, “Like a Dancer Unstrung.” Thibodeau is a 2008 graduate of Bangor High School.

Soden, who found inspiration in Malazan Book of the Fallen, a series by Canadian author Steven Erikson, took the poems from the fantasy books and interpreted them as songs. Erikson discovered Soden’s musical creations on YouTube and the two artists began to collaborate in 2009.

Delighted with the musical interpretation of his poetry, Erikson began to send unpublished poems to Soden, who sent demos in return. Erikson listened to the music and said he found that “this was a serious artist putting heart and soul into his performance.”

During their European tour this summer, Soden and Thibodeau visited Steven Erikson in England and were finally able to play their music for their muse. Soden plays the guitar and sings while Thibodeau shows her skills on the violin.

The duo create a variety of musical styles for each piece, “from classical to modern art-music to folk,” Soden said. “I take what I experience and work at interpreting it musically.”

Stop by the library for a unique performance from two up-and-coming artists. For more information, contact the library at 947-8336 or visit http:// www.bpl.lib.me.us.
