JEFFERSON – William H. Barnes, 78, passed away Aug. 4, 2011, at Togus Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Augusta, after a long battle with illness. He was born June 27, 1933, in Old Town, son of former state representative Harold E. Barnes and Fannie (Kirby) Barnes.
After his 10 years of military service, William lived and worked in Florida for many years. He ultimately forged a career from his love of airplanes and flying. He retired and returned in 1998 to Maine, where he pursued his love for gardening, especially tomatoes.
He is survived by his sisters, Gwen B. Murray of Jefferson and Joyce Ellis of Alton; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Charles, Franklin, Harold Jr., John and Wallis; and his loving companion, Margaret Reed of Florida.
A private memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 20. Interment will be at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
