ELLSWORTH – Condon Rodgers, a journalist and copy editor at the New York Times for 27 years and a longtime summer resident of the Gouldsboro village of Corea, died unexpectedly Aug. 12, 2011. She was 68.
Rodgers was the daughter of the late Floyd D. Rodgers Jr. and Jackson Rodgers, who lives in Hancock. She also was predeceased by a sister, Kerry Anderson. In addition to her mother, Rodgers is survived by a brother, Dwight Rodgers and sister-in-law, Ruth Rodgers, of the Gouldsboro village of Corea; nephews, Christopher Anderson of New York City and Daniel Rodgers of the Gouldsboro village of Prospect Harbor; and niece, Tema Lucero of Mount Morris, Mich. She also leaves several very dear friends, among them Sandy Phippen of Hancock, who knew her for 51 years, Nancy Wasson of Orland, Laverna Young, formerly of Corea, and Brad Eaton of Franklin.
Born in Gaffney, S.C., Rodgers spent her early childhood in New York City and her adolescence in Glen Rock, N.J. She graduated from Smith College and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Rodgers was an editor at the International Herald Tribune in Paris for three years before joining The New York Times as a copy editor in the early 1970s. She was an editor at The New York Times Magazine, the Sunday Business section and the Connecticut Weekly section before taking early retirement in 1998. Rodgers moved to Ellsworth with her mother in 1999. She most recently was employed part time at Hancock County Regional Communications Center.
At Rodgers’ request, there will be no memorial service.
