GLENBURN – Harold E. Brownell Jr., 70, lost his battle with ALS, Aug. 21, 2011, surrounded by his family with a beautiful view of Pushaw Lake that he enjoyed for greater than 30 years. He was born Aug. 19, 1941, son of Harold E. and Marion F. (McCrossen) Brownell Sr.

He was a huge advocate for The ALS Association raising several thousand dollars for the cause and was planning on attending the Walk to Defeat ALS, Aug. 27. He was well known in the automotive community for car sales as well as several years as a mechanic at the old Northeast-Chrysler-Plymouth and from there he went into sales. He had a special fondness for Plymouth muscle cars and was the original owner of a 1968 Barracuda that his sons are currently restoring. He held many positions in the sales industry as well as owning his own business in Glenburn. He was most recently a tractor salesman in Old Town, retiring from there due to health reasons. He was at Dow U.S. Air Force Base from 1959 to 1963, where he met his wife of 49 years, Bernetta.

In addition to his wife, Bernetta, he is survived by their three children, Harold E. Brownell III and his wife, Becky, Lloyd Brownell and his wife, Susan, and Colleen White and her husband, Harold; six grandchildren, Harold E. Brownell IV and his fiancee, Danielle Wood, Erica Brownell, Stuart Fairweather, Christine Fairweather, Christopher Brownell, and Samantha Brownell; two great-grandchildren, Holly Brownell and Harold E. Brownell V.; and several siblings, Penelope Geary, Bernice Erickson, Patricia Thone and her husband, James, Geraldine Alvarez and her husband, Richard, Elizabeth Sargeant and her husband, Samuel, all of Connecticut, Roger Brownell and his wife, Bernadene, of Bangor, and Patrick Brownell and his wife, Gina, of Virginia. He also had several nieces and nephews, one of which he was especially close to, David Brownell and his wife, Patricia, of Boston. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Albert Brownell.

The family thanks the Veterans Affairs, Jeannie Schwabe and Rowena Tinker, for their excellent care and kindness.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the service at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Glenburn. Although Harold loved flowers, he was greatly dedicated to The ALS Association and the fight for a cure.
