MATTAWAMKEAG – Laura M. Shedd, 99, wife of the late Howard E. Shedd, passed away Aug. 29, 2011, at her home. She was born Dec. 20, 1911, in Mattawamkeag, daughter of John and Addie (Doble) Tilton.
Laura graduated from Mattawamkeag High School as valedictorian at age 16. She attended Castine Normal School and worked for a time at Forster Manufacturing Co. For more than 80 years, she was an active member of both the Grange and Order of the Eastern Star. She knit many hats for troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. She enjoyed cooking, especially baking bread. She thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon soaps, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, and the Saturday night Lawrence Welk Show.
She is survived by five children, Althea Wallace and Paul Sr. of Enfield, Janet Moulen and Tom of Rye, N.H., Galen Shedd and Ethel of Dixmont, Derward Shedd and Betty of Millinocket, and Alton Shedd and Mary of Lincoln; 11 grandchildren, Sandra York Whitehouse, Rhonda York Crotty, Paul Wallace Jr., Belinda Moulen Bowling, Debbie Moulen Churchwell, Suzanne Shedd Fougere, David Shedd, Danny Shedd, Kathy Shedd Giddings, Tammy Millette and Mark Shedd; 20 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, seven great-great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She also leaves two half brothers, Vaughn Tilton and Richard Tilton; two very special caregivers: her niece, Shirley Budge and very good friend and neighbor, Kathleen Verduga; as well as Bob and Peggy Berg, Brian McKinnon, and the Fosses. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Charlotte York; three brothers, Ralph Tilton, Irvine Tilton and Elmer Tilton; and several half brothers and half sisters.
Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln, during which time an Eastern Star service will be held 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Leon Robinson officiating. Interment will be at Mattawamkeag Cemetery.
