ORONO, Maine — University of Maine police charged three students with possession of marijuana around midnight Monday after responding to two separate incidents, university spokesman Joe Carr said on Tuesday.

Police were patrolling near the tennis courts around 11:45 p.m. when they noticed a group of students standing near the bike path and went to check on them.

“They approached a group of five people and investigated and as a result [court] summons were issued to two for possession of marijuana,” Carr said.

Eric Walter, 18, and Cody Degroff, 19, were charged.

About 45 minutes later, around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, a resident assistant at Somerset Hall called police to report the smell of marijuana coming from a student’s dorm room.

The responding officer found a pot pipe and a container with a trace amount of marijuana and charged Luke Hettermann, 18, with possession of marijuana. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
