A new documentary premiering this month explores how comedian Dane Cook’s brother stole millions from him at the height of his career.
That true crime documentary, “Funny Money,” will be available for streaming on Apple TV on Sept. 29, according to the Portsmouth Herald.
Back in December 2008, police raided the York home of Cook’s brother Darryl McCauley and sister-in-law Erika McCauley, as well as another property in Wilmington, Massachusetts, seizing more than $800,000, including money stashed in plastic bags hidden in tomato sauce jars, the Herald reported.
Darryl McCauley had been acting as Cook’s business manager, a job Cook gave him after McCauley, who had been working as a corrections officer, was assaulted by an inmate, according to the Herald.
But McCauley would use the trust Cook placed in him to steal millions of dollars, much of which was invested in businesses and properties in York, including the Blue Sky restaurant and the Atlantic House in York Beach.
In 2010, the McCauleys pleaded guilty to multiple counts of larceny and were ordered to pay $12 million in restitution. Darryl McCauley was sentenced to five to six years in prison, while Erika McCauley was sentenced to up to three years in prison.
York has figured prominently in Cook’s life. His family has a cottage near Nubble, and Cook proposed to his wife in York in 2022, according to the Herald.
