PEMBROKE – Carl Harold Abell, 76, passed away Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, at a Bangor hospital. Carl was born Aug. 2, 1935, in Reading, Mass., son of the late Harold and Jeanette (Tromblay) Abell.

After graduating from high school, he started his career with Stop ‘n Shop, where he worked until his retirement in 1993. During his career Carl worked in receiving and helped setting up new locations throughout the area. He was a proud member of the National Rifle Association and a pastel artist in his spare time. Carl was an avid gardener and enjoyed fishing and woodworking.

Surviving are his companion of 25 years, Carol Allard of Pembroke; five children, Carl Abell Jr. and his wife, Maureen, Michael Abell and his wife, Denise, and Steven Abell and his wife, Kathy, all of Wilmington, Mass., Matthew Abell and his companion, Darcie DeLuca, and Elizabeth Abell and her companion, David Joly, all of Salem, Mass.; five grandchildren, Jillian Abell and her husband, Joseph Zechner, Kyle Abell, Kathryn Abell, Harold Abell, all of Wilmington, Mass., and Lillian Abell of Salem, Mass.; a great-grandson, Joseph Zechner; two sisters, Coralee Carado and her husband, Paul, of Beverly, Mass., and Sandra Ludwig of North Fort Myers, Fla.; an uncle, Ralph Tromblay of Hampton, N.H.; an aunt, Irene Pospisil of Brea, Calif.; Carol’s children, Wendy Murray and her husband, Dan, of Ozark, Mo., and Stephanie Allard and her husband, Scott Fraser, of Perry; and Carol’s grandchildren, Sarah Franey and her husband, James, of Collinsville, Ill., Erin Murray of Springfield, Mo., Allison Murray of Ozark, Mo., and Riley and Wren Fraser of Perry.

A celebration of Carl’s life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at Pembroke United Methodist Church, 38 Little Falls Road, Pembroke. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais and Eastport. Condolences and memories may be shared at
