STETSON and ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. – Earl C. Smith Sr., 83, husband of Jeanette D. (Campbell) Smith, died Sept. 2, 2011, at a Bangor nursing center. He was born Dec. 3, 1927, in Hollis, the son of Carl C. and Edith (Hutchinson) Smith.

Earl served with the U.S. Army Air Corps, later becoming the Air Force, during the Korean War. He worked for 33 years for the Federal Aviation Administration and received a Presidential Commendation from President Reagan for his outstanding service. Earl and Jeanette retired in 1983 and wintered in Zephyrhills, Fla. He loved gardening, woodworking, fishing and summers at camp.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Carol Gray and her husband, Ronald, of Orrington, Earl Smith Jr. and his wife, Evelyn, of Bucksport and Debbie Stevens and her husband, Mark, of Naples; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; six brothers, Pete, Richard, Robert, Clifford, David and Kerry Smith; three sisters, Sandra Constant, Helen Smith and June Lavoie; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and by three brothers, Lee, Carl and Frank Smith. His family gratefully thanks the staff of the Maine Veterans Home for all the loving care given to him and his family.

Family and friends may visit 3-5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor, at a later date.
