CHERRYFIELD – Everett E. Mathews Sr., 74, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. He was born Dec. 6, 1936, son of the late Roger Sr. and Elizabeth Mathews.
He was a graduate of Cherryfield Academy, the class of 1954. After graduation Everett worked various jobs while assisting his father in starting the oil business RW Mathews & Sons, Inc. Beginning April 23, 1966, Barbara and Everett began their 45 year adventure as friends and partners in marriage. He went on to own the family business, with his brother Billy, until they sold it in 2002 to Webber Energy Fuels. Everett continued with the transport side of the business, happily driving his 18-wheeler until his eyesight wouldn’t allow it. In retirement he enjoyed four-wheeling and any time spent at his camp on Round Pond with his wife and family. Everett will always be remembered for his friendly attitude and his dancing.
In addition to his loving wife, Barbara, Everett is survived by a son, Everett Jr. and his wife, Jean; daughters, Debbie Poirier and her husband, Richie, Elaine Wood and Cathy Kirschner and her husband, John; grandchildren Jaimie, Alison, Nicole, Mary-Margaret Kirschner, Crystal Look and her husband, Jeremy, Ashley and Sarah Wood, Katy and Jenny Mathews, Colby and Lindsay Poirier; one great-grandchild, Hayden Look; one brother, Billy Mathews and wife, Betty; a niece and nephew, Christa Clarkson and Roger Mathews III; and special friends, Nedra and Fulton, Paula, Kenny, Jolene and Emory, Gloria, Jimmy and Becky, and more too numerous to mention.
Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Cherryfield First Baptist Church with Pastor Max Merrill officiating. A gathering for friends and family will be held at the church after the service. A private family committal service will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery, Cherryfield.
