HARRISON, Maine — Investigators say a small vintage airplane that crashed in southern Maine last year, killing two people, had run out of fuel.
The National Transportation Safety Board also said the pilot, 68-year-old George Fortin of Naples, should not have been flying because his application for a medical certificate had been denied by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The 1946 Taylorcraft BC 12-d crashed on Aug. 12, 2010, in Harrison. Also killed was 73-year-old Tony Kalinuk of Harrison.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the safety board report said Fortin had a private pilot certificate issued in 1982, but that his application for a third-class medical certificate in 2008 was denied. The report gave no details on that.
