SURRY – Winetta ‘Winnie’ Thelma Bean Elliott, 83, passed away Sept. 7, 2011, at a Bangor health care facility after the bravest of battles with heart disease and diabetes. She was born Jan. 5, 1928, in Lewiston, the second daughter of Herbert George and Thelma M. (Luckings) Bean.
Her growing-up years were difficult as many during this time and she experienced many sacrifices that shaped her character for the better. As a young woman she married a Maine boy with whom she brought forth her three daughters. Winnie loved the style of finger curls and made sure her little ones were always properly curled and dressed in dresses. Homemaking was her love and she taught these skills to her family and even once managed a motel in Rye, N.H., where she met the gentleman who won her heart, Kenneth C. Elliott. They married in October 1969, and moved to California later returning to Maine, where Ken died in 1989. She moved to Surry after his death and spent her remaining years enjoying the daily gentle flow of life. She found dear Russian friends just around the corner on Newbury Neck, and family was once again just up the road and grandchildren came to brighten her days.
Winnie is survived by her three daughters, Carol Mae Philbrook and husband, Ralph, of Windham, N.H., Brenda Jean Shacklett and husband, Jimmy, of Ellsworth and Cynthia J. Jarvis of Greenbush; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; her oldest sister, Pauline Evans of Connecticut; two younger half sisters, Betty and Diane Bean; one brother, Herbert G. Bean Jr. of Newport; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Richard and John R. E. Bean; and son-in-law, Russell Jarvis.
A private service will be held. Interment will be at Morgan Bay Cemetery, Surry, across from her home. Donations in Winnie’s memory may be made to American Heart Association, 51 U.S. Route 1, Suite M., Scarborough, ME 04074 or American Diabetes Association, 330 Congress St., 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02210.
