EAST CORINTH – Clarence “Doc” Burleigh Jr., 88, died peacefully Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, surrounded by his family at Maine Veterans Home, Bangor. He was born Oct. 24, 1922, in Millinocket, son of Clarence O. and Geneva (Davis) Burleigh Sr.
After graduating from East Corinth Academy in 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and served in the European Theater in Africa and Italy. He owned and operated Western Auto Texaco, East Corinth, for many years. In 1982 he sold his business and home and spent summers at his cottage on Sebec Lake and for 25 years wintered in Thonotassa, Fla. He belonged to Olive Branch Lodge No. 124 of Charleston, Anah Temple Shrine of Bangor, where he was an honorary member of Acadamations, Corinth Volunteer Fire Department, a charter member and past commander of American Legion Post No. 115, Corinth, and a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Corinth.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Marie; daughters, Bonnie Bridges of Auburn, Diana Caldwell and husband, Larry, of Madison and Susan Shaw and husband, Richard, of Hudson; seven grandchildren, Lisa Parker, Michael Gormley, Jason Gormley, Angie Hartt, Jeremy Hartt, Amy Matulis and Andrew Shaw; a brother, Glenn Burleigh and wife, Gloria, of Stetson; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, William Burleigh.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at Corinth United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James Proctor and nephew, Glenn Burleigh Jr. officiating. The family invites all who wish to join them at the church fellowship hall after the services for a time of refreshment and fellowship. Those who wish may make donations in Doc’s memory to Maine Veterans Home, Bangor; Corinth United Methodist Church or a charity of their choice.
