ELLSWORTH – Julie A. Mason, 57, died Sept. 23, 2011, at an Ellsworth health care facility. She was born March 18, 1954, in Blue Hill, the daughter of Raymond Hillard and Arlene Arvilla (Moore) Piper.
Julie graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1972. She started her lifelong career at Ashmore Brothers Auto Body when she was 16, working part time. This eventually worked into a full-time position. Julie worked under the guidance of her mother, Arlene and owner, Earl Ashmore. In 1998, when Earl retired, Julie took over as president. Julie continued to work up until her death. Julie loved her time at camp on Flanders’s Pond. Her friends, family and “crew” from Ashmore’s were very special to her. She was very involved in the Ellsworth community, where she was a very proud lifelong resident. Julie was a member of Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce, serving as its board’s vice president, president elect and secretary. She loved the Autumn Gold Car Show. Julie also enjoyed bowling and was a member of a number of leagues. She was also a past member of Ellsworth Noontime Rotary Club and a board member of Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County. At the time of her death, Julie was a member of the Ellsworth High School Class of ’72, 2012 reunion committee.
She is survived by her mother, Arlene of Ellsworth: a son, Brandon Pettengill of Franklin; stepson, Timothy Mason and fiancee, Tara Hart, of Hancock; stepdaughter, Stephanie Harris of Kenduskeag; one brother, Forrest “Jasie” Piper and wife, Jane, of Hancock; grandchildren, the light of her life, her grandson, Codey Pettengill and his mother, Jessica DeRaps, Taylor and Tanner Mason, and Rachel and Spencer Harris; two nephews, Mark Piper and wife, Kara, and their children, and Jamey Piper and children; two nieces, Robyn and Nicole Piper; special cousins, Robbie and Diane Grant, and Myron and Dottie Grant and their families; and special friend, Rick Trombley. She will also be sadly missed by her dog, Sabrina. Julie was predeceased by her husband, P. Wayne Mason; her father, Raymond Piper; and brother, Raymond Piper Jr. The family expresses a special thank you to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and Cortland Living Center for the special care that Julie received while there.
Friends are invited to call 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.
