BANGOR – Charles E. Roberts, 91, died peacefully Sept. 23, 2011, at a local hospital. He was born Nov. 3, 1919, in Bangor, son of Elmer E. Roberts and Mary (Connelly) Roberts.

Charlie married Louise (Giles) Roberts, April 25, 1940. They wintered in Ormond Beach, Fla., for many years and were married for 67 years until her death in 2007. He was a graduate of Bangor High School, Class of 1937. Charlie then joined his father in the printing business and later became the president of Furbush-Roberts Printing Co. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a gunner on a B-29. Charlie was very active in the community as a Little League coach and a basketball coach at the YMCA for many years. He also played semi-pro baseball with the Orrington Cubs. Charlie was a member of Bangor Lions Club, serving as president and district governor, and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for his service. He was a member of the Bangor chapter of Maine Association of Football Officials for 39 years, serving as local and state president and state rules interpreter. Charlie was a long-standing member of Penobscot Valley Country Club and was an avid golfer. He loved watching sports on TV, especially the Red Sox and college sports. His most favorite place to be was at his camp on Beech Hill Pond. He also enjoyed a good game of cribbage.

Surviving are his six children, Marion Hessert and her husband, Gen. Wilfred Hessert, of Palm Coast, Fla., Anne Spencer and her fiance, Edward Baker, of Bangor, Jane LeVie of Bangor, Thomas Roberts and his wife, Suzanne, of Hampden, Lesley Waterman and her husband, Neil, of Bangor, and Mary Ellen Stone and her husband, Alfred, of Portland; 15 grandchildren, Brian, Heidi, Carl, Sean, Derek, Sandra, Allen, Brigitte, Caitlin, Abbey, Amy, Kelly, Tom, Molly and Charlie; and 20 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Louise, he was predeceased by three siblings, John Roberts, Charlotte Swinehart and Frances Glover.

Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the funeral Mass Thursday at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
