JONESPORT – Harry Steele Rogers, 95, passed away Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at his residence. Harry was born May 10, 1916, in Jonesport, son of Russell H. and Helen (Steele) Rogers.

He was a graduate of Jonesport High School, a World War II veteran and was one of the first board of directors for Downeast Community Hospital, Machias. Harry was also a charter member of Jonesport Rotary Club and one of the organizers of Resthaven Nursing Home, now Sunrise Care Facility. He was a member of Community of Christ Church, Jonesport, and was very active in the church for many years. Harry and his father owned and operated R.H. Rogers Stores in Jonesport and Machias. In later years it became known as Rogers True Value, until his retirement in 1985.

He is survived by his son, Russell M. Rogers and Jane of Myerstown, Pa., and Port Richey, Fla.; granddaughter, Stephanie Gattens and Lawrence of Myerstown, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, Jill and Jason Gattens of Myerstown, Pa.; sisters, Arline Riley, formerly of Jonesport and now a resident of Narraguagus Bay Health Care Facility, Milbridge, and Madolyn R. Tucker of Addison; niece, Rebecca Tucker Dobson of Brewster, Wash.; and several cousins. Harry was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis, Feb. 18, 2008; and his parents.

A funeral service is scheduled 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at Community of Christ Church, Jonesport. Private interment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport. In lieu of flowers, donations in Harry’s memory may be made to Community of Christ Roof Fund, care of Pastor Sharon Church, P.O. Box 510, Jonesport, ME 04649. Services are under the direction of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Machias.
