LINNEUS – Darrell C. McGuire passed away unexpectedly Sept. 29, 2011, at home. He was born Sept. 3, 1933, in Linneus, to Carl A. and Ella Bustard McGuire.
Darrell was a successful businessman who worked many years as a logging contractor for Great Northern Paper Co., seeing many changes in the industry from horses to the modern equipment, building many logging roads, always happy working on a bulldozer and excavator. Later he established DBJ McGuire & McGuire Motorsports, Houlton. An outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. Darrell put together a sled racing team for many years and always enjoyed the competition. He retired in 2000, taking up hobbies of gardening, cooking and the game of golf. Golf being his favorite pastime he played frequently. He was a man with strong opinions and always up for a good debate. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to someone in need and volunteering to community service.
Darrell is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Barbara Dewitt McGuire; three sons, Doug and Sarah of Linneus, Brent and Shellby of Linneus and Jon and Heather of Linneus; two daughters, Catherine and Terry Reeves of Houlton and Elizabeth of South Portland; three sisters, Shirley Thompson of Connecticut, Bonnie and husband, Wayne Dwyer, of Linneus and Joanne and husband, Forrest Howe, of New Limerick; one brother, Carl “Gene” and wife, Lana McGuire, of Linneus; a sister-in-law, Marlene Hogan of Linneus; brother-in-law, Robert and Charlotte Ash of Arizona; a special brother-in-law and golfing partner, Dewey DeWitt; 12 grandchildren, Brian and Cheryl, Jennifer and Shannon, Ashley and Ryan, Brad and Heather, Nick, Dillon, Bailey, Jordan, McKenzie, Jared, Ellie and Meg; five great-grandchildren, Alexis, Payden, Olivia, Brayden and Benjamin; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Ella and father, Carl; three brothers, Floyd McGuire, Gerald “Chink” McGuire and Philip McGuire; one sister, Marion Figgins; infant daughter, Julie Rae; infant son; and a brother-in-law, Arden Thompson.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Houlton Wesleyan Church, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Wayne Robertson officiating. Interment will be at Linneus Cemetery.
