PRESQUE ISLE – Ellery Keith Libby passed away peacefully Sept. 30, 2011, at a Presque Isle nursing home with his family by his side. He was born July 8, 1926, in Mapleton, to Richard and Iva (Carter) Libby, the next to last of 10 children.
While attending Mapleton High School he was drafted, entered the U.S. Navy and served during World War II in the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific. He later graduated from Aroostook School of Commerce and worked for International Harvester as a bookkeeper and at Sears and W.T. Grant in sales, eventually retiring from Sears in 1991 to spend part of each year in Sebastian, Fla., with his wife. Applauded for years as the fun-loving master of ceremonies of the annual Mapleton High School Alumni banquet, he was well known for his rakish sense of humor. To his friends and large extended family he will always be remembered for his superior skills in the kitchen.
Ellery is survived by his wife, Alma (Doyen) Libby of Presque Isle and Sebastian, Fla.; son, Stewart and wife, Cissy, of Presque Isle; daughter, Sandra and husband, Teddy Brewer, of Blaine; son, Brent and wife, Bridget, of Boston; daughter, Julie of Rumson, N.J., and her boyfriend, Ralph Michaud; grandchildren, Rick Briggs, Hollie Brewer-Cushman and Jared Brewer; and great-grandchildren, Kayla, Conner and Tucker Briggs, Ella Brewer and Elizabeth Cushman. He will be remembered as uncle and great-uncle by dozens of nieces and nephews. Ellery was predeceased by all of his siblings: sisters, Lila Berry, Vella Bedell, Arlene McHatten, Thelma Wood, Alda Frank and Audrey Elliott, and brothers, Lawrence, Ivan and Lloyd; as well as his brother-in-law, Willard Doyen.
A reception for family and friends was held Sunday at the Crow’s Nest. The family requests that anyone wishing to remember Ellery make a donation to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are in the care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle. Online condolences may be made at
