CHARLESTON – Robert Edward Merchant, 96, passed away Oct. 4, 2011, at his home with his daughters by his side. He was born Jan. 15, 1915, in Hancock.
Bob graduated from East Corinth Academy and worked as a carpenter all his life. He was a World War II veteran and holder of the Charleston Gold Headed Cane. He was a member of American Legion Post 115 for more than 60 years and a charter member of two antique car clubs. He loved to be in parades with his old car, enjoyed meals for friends in Corinth and Chesley’s auction every Saturday night. He was an avid reader and loved watching game shows.
Bob was predeceased by his wife of almost 70 years, Vera; and his son, Bobby. He is survived by his daughter, Benice and husband, Dana, who had been his caregivers for the last few months; daughter, Donna Avery, who also provided care; grandchildren, Lisa Saunders and husband, Scott, who assisted in end of life care, and Jobi Mcarthur and husband, Jimmy, who brought him many good meals, Ted Caruso, and Melissa Caruso and partner, Todd; as well as 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Corinthian Cemetery, Corinth, with Pastor David Lassell officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bangor Humane Society. For more information, contact Thompson Funeral Home at 285-3377 or at
