PEMBROKE – Waldo Merrill Tarbell, 106, passed away Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at Oceanview Nursing Home, Lubec. Waldo was born July 3, 1905, in Meddybemps, son of the late William and Florence (Connick) Tarbell.
He married Kathleen Barnes, April 9, 1927, in Calais. They resided in Meddybemps for two years before relocating to Pembroke, where they have lived ever since. Waldo worked various jobs until becoming a track man for Maine Central Railroad, retiring with more than 35 years of service. After retirement he worked part time doing carpentry and enjoyed gardening, woodworking and making latch-hook rugs.
In addition to his parents, Waldo was predeceased by his loving wife of more than 80 years, Kathleen Tarbell; three brothers, Harold, Alvin and Russell; his sister, Evelyn Cousins; and a son-in-law, Wallace Brown. Surviving are his two children, Elliott Tarbell and his wife, Joyce, of Marshfield and Helen Brown of Pembroke; six grandchildren, Brian and Wayne Tarbell, Cathy Farren, Colleen Smith, Cheryl Curtis and Jan Brown; 12 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Clarkside Cemetery, Pembroke. Donations in Waldo’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Condolences and memories may be shared at
